This adored outerwear, which was originally called the ‘flight jacket’, was first created in 1917. Since then they’ve evolved from being just utilitarian to being a fashion heavy hitter.

We never really saw them away from the limelight — they’ve become an autumn winter staple in their own right, particularly over the past few years.
After supermodel Irina Shayk and celebrity Hailey Bieber were both seen wearing aviator jackets with shearling accents while out and about in Hollywood last year, there was an increase by 50% in searches for shearling jackets, according to Lyst.
This year, searches for the outerwear on TikTok are huge. Over 800 million views, to be precise.
So will the trend stick for 2023? The answer is yes.

Are aviator jackets still in style?
It’s safe to say that this type of jacket never really went out of style. While it may have been overshadowed by other styles at some points, it’s still favoured by many during the colder months of the year.
Designers such as Kenzo, Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton have their versions of this style staple for AW22, which has acted as a green light for the high street to follow suit in the year ahead.
What do you wear with aviator jackets?
Here at Wear Next, we encourage everyone to wear exactly what they feel like wearing.
If you’re looking for inspiration though, you’ll never go wrong with classic pairings. A white tee, jeans, and boots combo goes so well with this jacket style.
You can also take inspiration from Miu Miu and team with a pleated skirt to toughen up a more feminine look.
