Fake tan makes us feel sun-kissed and healthy, but it’s a nightmare for staining – so how do you get self tanner out of your clothes?

How do you get fake tan out of clothes?
The key to getting fake tan out of clothes is moving quickly. Most self tan stains will come out of a regular wash, but for more stubborn stains read on.
Start by turning the clothing inside out and running the stain under cold water. Then use warm water and soap, such as Fairy Liquid or hand soap, to blot the stain, going from the outer edges inwards.
Rinse the stain with cold water, then just pop in the wash as normal using heavy-duty washing detergent.
Do not put the clothing in the dryer until you’re sure the stain has gone.

If the stain still hasn’t gone, soak it overnight in cold water and oxygen-based bleach. The package should explain how to mix the two.
Another method is to put the stained item into the hottest wash the clothing label allows, along with stain removal powder such as Fairy Non-Bio Stain Remover. You can also use targeted stain removers, such as Dr Beckmann’s Stain Devils Pre-Wash, which comes with an easy-to-use applicator.
The same method applies for sheets or towels.
Does fake tan wash out of clothes?
Fake tan usually washes out of clothes easily, but more stubborn stains can take a little extra care.
How do you wash fake tan out of wool or silk?
To remove fake tan stains from wool and silk, gently wash the stain with a solution of washing-up liquid and warm water. Then wash the item in a gentle 30C wash.

Does Vanish remove fake tan?
Vanish also works really well for removing fake tan stains from clothes.
For stubborn stains, rub it on the stain before rinsing. Alternatively, you can mix one scoop into 4L of water and leave your clothing to soak for up to 1 hour for colour garments, or up to 6 hours for whites.
You can also add a scoop directly into the wash.
