Fake tan makes us feel sun-kissed and healthy, but it’s a nightmare for staining – so how do you get self tanner out of your clothes?

How do you get fake tan out of clothes?

The key to getting fake tan out of clothes is moving quickly. Most self tan stains will come out of a regular wash, but for more stubborn stains read on.

Start by turning the clothing inside out and running the stain under cold water. Then use warm water and soap, such as Fairy Liquid or hand soap, to blot the stain, going from the outer edges inwards.

Rinse the stain with cold water, then just pop in the wash as normal using heavy-duty washing detergent.

Do not put the clothing in the dryer until you’re sure the stain has gone.

If the stain still hasn’t gone, soak it overnight in cold water and oxygen-based bleach. The package should explain how to mix the two.

Another method is to put the stained item into the hottest wash the clothing label allows, along with stain removal powder such as Fairy Non-Bio Stain Remover. You can also use targeted stain removers, such as Dr Beckmann’s Stain Devils Pre-Wash, which comes with an easy-to-use applicator.

The same method applies for sheets or towels.
