The Boxing Day sales are in full swing and I’ve done some serious research to bring you the best of this year’s biggest and best discounts. Trying to stay on top of all the discounts and offers can be exhausting, so if your inbox is jam packed full of offers and you don’t know where to begin, it might be handy to have it laid out in one place. It’s my job to identify which sales are worth skipping and those worth shopping, so below you’ll find a long list of the best of 2023’s Boxing Day sales.

While we don’t condone overspending (and during the sales, it’s fair to say we’re more likely to buy a whole host of items we never even needed or wanted), the post-Christmas sales really are a great time to take the plunge and buy that investment piece you’ve really wanted for a while. During the Boxing Day sales, brands usually offer the best discounts of the entire year. Black Friday is deemed the biggest shopping day of the year, but it’s later on in the year that you’ll find the best discounts.

When do the Boxing Day sales start?

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Boxing Day sales start on Boxing Day, but more and more stores are starting to begin their sales early. In some cases they begin on Christmas Day. Zara is a case in point; they started their Boxing Day sale usually at 9pm on Christmas Day. Other brands kicked theirs off days early, like & Other Stories, H&M and COS.

The best way to stay updated on the exact date and time the sales are starting is to sign up to each brand’s individual newsletters or to download their apps and enable notifications. This is usually the first place a sale is mentioned and subscribers often get early access to the sale. It’s also a good idea to bookmark this page, as I will be updating it as soon as I get more information.

Another tip is to always save the items you are lusting over in your favourites on each brand’s website and don’t deviate from this when the sale starts. This makes it so much faster to click through to checkout and you’re far more likely to bag the items you want before they sell out.

Are Boxing Day sales better than Black Friday?

Sales can be quite predictable year after year as they tend to follow the same pattern. It kicks off with the January sales and then again usually in June, before Black Friday and Cyber Monday which fall on the last Friday in November and the following Monday.

While Black Friday is synonymous with being the biggest sale of the year I have my reservations. Black Friday of course offers some great deals, especially in tech, but I always find the Boxing Day and January sales to offer better deals. Black Friday is so notorious as the biggest sale of the year, but I believe it’s more to do with the fact that it takes place just before Christmas, making it the ideal time to buy presents for loved ones. Of course you’re going to do your Christmas shopping when there’s a 20% discount.

In a 2019 investigation, it was discovered that 85% of products advertised at a discount on Black Friday were actually cheaper at other times throughout the year. In fact, they found that 98% of home or technology products were cheaper to buy after Black Friday. It’s the same story for fashion sales; brands always offer huge discounts in January as they want to offload a lot of their inventory and make space for their new stock and this is what drives the really low prices. You have to be snappy about it though, as winter clearance sales can only go on until supplies last.

How much are the discounts during the Boxing Day sales?

While it differs significantly from brand to brand, you can expect Boxing day sales to offer discounts of at least 50% off or in some cases you can get up to 70% off.

Are Boxing Day sales online as well as in-store?

Boxing day sales take place both online as well as in stores. Online may start slightly earlier as you can usually get access from midnight the night before whereas as you will have to wait until 9am on Boxing Day for in-store sales. Another disadvantage of the in-store sales is the queues. I for one will be shopping the sale from the comfort of my bed.

Sometimes online stores can even offer additional discount codes for an extra 10% off or free delivery, so make sure to check this before you make in store purchases and miss out on extra discounts.
