If you missed out on Black Friday, you may have actually done yourself a favour. Despite it being the biggest shopping day of the year, the sales are actually much more fruitful in January.
Nearly all the most popular high street brands take part in Boxing Day and January sales – including Zara, H&M and ASOS – though not all of them advertise their discounts widely.

Are January sales better than Black Friday sales?
As mentioned, Black Friday is known widely as the biggest shopping event of the year.
This is probably because it’s on for a short time, nearly all brands take part and it takes place just before Christmas, so it’s the ideal time to buy presents.
Black Friday discounts are great for snapping up newly-released items, but it’s worth waiting for Boxing Day and January sales.
In a 2019 investigation, Which? discovered that 85% of products advertised during Black Friday sales were actually cheaper at other times of the year.
In fact, they found that 98% of home or technology products were cheaper to buy after Black Friday.
Fashion is slightly different of course, but after Christmas is always a better time to snap up discounted items as the prices tend to be lower after the gift giving day.
Brands try to clear a chunk of their inventories in preparation for the New Year, so they will try to offer many items at incredibly low prices.
While it still differs from brand to brand, you can expect January sales to offer discounts of 50% or more.
Are Boxing Day sales online?
You can opt to shop in-store now, but there are plenty of sales online too – so you don’t even have to get out of bed to go shopping.
Some brands apply these discounts automatically, while others require a special code at checkout, so you just have to take note to ensure you don’t accidentally miss a saving.

When do the January sales start?
Boxing Day and January sales are pretty much the same thing. Many sales kick off straight after Christmas on Boxing Day and continue for weeks, while others have already started and will only get bigger as the weeks go on.
As expected, the most popular items sell out first, but if you’re patient you may find that some pieces you have your eye on are further reduced over time.

Is it better to shop during January?
One of the best things about shopping in January is getting the best deals on a few holiday sale leftovers from retailers, especially if you didn’t get to check off everything on your wishlist.
You can also stock up on winter clothes earlier in the year. Many shops offer great deals on their winter collection until January, but you have to be quick about it.
They only offer winter clearance sales until supplies last. So, if you want a reeeaallly early start on your winter wardrobe, then you better keep an eye on all your favourite brands offering New Year deals.
