Perhaps the most exciting events of the year for those who work in the industry, there’s a huge buzz around Fashion Week, whether it’s the street style set or the innovative designs from labels like Gucci, Dior and Chanel. The first ever fashion week took place way back in 1943 in New York, and they’re still going strong in 2023.

How many Fashion Weeks are there in a year?
There are typically two Fashion Weeks every year in the ‘Big Four’ at Paris, London, New York and Milan. The week- long event sees designers showcasing their Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections twice yearly. Fashion Week also takes place in cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Berlin, and these also take place twice yearly in order to showcase the two seasons, Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter.
How many fashion seasons are there?
There are typically four seasons for fashion: Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter, Resort, and Pre-Fall. While Fashion Weeks mostly show the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections, we naturally buy clothing all year round with some fast fashion brands dropping collections 24/7. The way we shop has changed, and so it makes sense that we’d have more than two fashion seasons each year.
Resort refers to the collections available around May, with the name coming from a former time when wealthy shoppers would buy designer pieces during their holidays. Pre-Fall is as it sounds, referring to the collections that come before Fall/Winter in December.

Fashion Week is a bi-annual event, taking place twice yearly. However there are cities that only showcase one season during Fashion Week. For instance, Miami Fashion Week is only held once a year.
