An oversized blazer is a style staple, but how do you wear it? If you’re not sure where to start, let me be your guide. As a fan of everything oversized, this layering piece is a must-have in my wardrobe. Regardless of the season, I’m rarely spotted in anything other than a big blazer as I find it makes pretty much anything look more considered. While many trends come and go, you’ll notice that the oversized blazer appears year after year on celebrities, influencers and the runway, so it’s well worth investing in if you’re looking for something that won’t date quicker than you can say skinny jeans.
Gone are the days when blazers were reserved for men at work. In recent years women have adopted the outerwear as their own and it’s since become a symbol of the cool girl aesthetic, with style icons like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Elsa Hosk amongst fans of the styling piece. It offers both a masculine and feminine edge today, and can be thrown over anything from a dress to a pair of baggy jeans.
So how do you wear it without looking like a 5-year-old drowning in your father’s clothes? Here, I’ll be sharing some outfit inspiration to keep in your back pocket. Next, check out our edit of the best M&S jeans available right now or the best camel coats ahead of autumn winter 2023.

What do you wear with an oversized blazer?
Oversized blazers go well with nearly everything, but it’s best to start simple. Throw your jacket over a simple white tee and a pair of baggy jeans to make your outfit more interesting. If you’re not a jeans person, why not try wearing your blazer over a dress? This looks works best for tighter-fitting dresses. Another easy option is to invest in a blazer co-ord. This takes the stress out of styling and always looks chic.
What jeans should you wear with an oversized blazer?
Blazers and denim are a foolproof combination. They almost always go well together, but if you’re not sure where to start, wear your oversized blazer with a pair of straight-cut and cropped jeans. These slimmer styles complement the baggy look of the outerwear, so you don’t look like you’re drowning in material. That being said, you can most certainly also wear yours with baggy jeans. If there’s a little too much material, cinch in your waist with a chunky belt.
How to style oversized blazer
Blazers aren’t just office wear – they’re now a street style essential. Here’s how to wear them.
Suit up
Pair your blazer with a matching pair of trousers and you’ll instantly look put together. The blazer and trousers don’t need to be exactly the same, but if they blend well together and look coordinated, you’re onto a winner. If you’re petite and don’t want to be swamped by material, try pushing up your sleeves and using a hair tie to keep them in place.
Over a dress
Throw a jacket over a slim-fitting dress. The boxy structure of the blazer will completely transform your outfit and complement the dress perfectly.
With jeans
Upgrade jeans and a tee with the addition of a blazer. There’s always a place for the casual look, but it completely transforms an otherwise simple outfit to something a whole lot more stylish. Heeled boots will look super smart, or opt for chunky trainers for a more casual take.
With a mini skirt
Blazers go really well with mini skirts or dresses too, especially if they’re a little longer than the skirt. Emili Sindlev (above) shows us how it’s done, teaming her yellow mini skirt and pinstripe blazer with a casual pair of Adidas Samba’s.
With a maxi skirt
If the idea of wearing a mini skirt fills you with dread, you’re not alone – and you have options! This jacket works well with longer lengths too, whether it’s a maxi dress or skirt.
