What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global event that unites millions of people in support of the environment, as well as celebrating the impact that this day has had since it began.

This day encourages individuals to look at their own impact on the environment and understand how how any climate action can lead to change on a local, national and global level.

Why was Earth Day created?

Earth Day was founded in the aftermath of the 1969 oil spill in California, which had a devastating impact on the environment and wildlife.  This encouraged US senator Gaylord Nelson to organise teach-ins on college campuses across the United States, educating students about both air and water pollution on April 22nd, 1970.

The impact of these teach-ins was monumental and sparked 20 million Americans to participate in marches and rallies to protest against the degradation of the environment and to spark environmental legislative change.

And thatโ€™s exactly what they achieved. Not long after the first Earth Day the US passed the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.

What is the Earth Day theme for 2023?

Invest In Our Planet. This is a continuation from last year’s theme which encourages individuals, businesses and governments to invest in a better future of the planet.

At an individual level, this involves spending time into thinking about how you can better your environmental impact, and make an impact with how you vote and spend money.
