They're making a big comeback.

Last Updated on February 7, 2023

Every season, there’s always one item that everyone goes wild for. Remember the feather-trimmed PJs and Shrimps handbags?

This year, it’s cargo pants. Think what you will, but this Y2K trend is going strong (and coming to haunt anyone who grew up in the early 2000s).

If you’re nervous about digging out your cargos, you might be inspired by the spring summer catwalks, which saw countless utility-inspired designs from fashion houses like Givenchy, Paco Rabanne, and Miu Miu.

Closer to home, you’ll see them popping up everywhere from your Instagram feed to on the bodies of your fellow commuters. They’re everywhere.

Are cargo pants in style in 2023?

Yes, yes and yes.

If you’re not a big fan of the low-rise trend that’s a huge part of the Y2K aesthetic, you’ll be glad to know these are high-wasted.

Expect to see colourful options, from pastel pinks to olive green, and if you prefer a more classic look, there’s always classic black, beige and khaki.

Which jeans will be in style this year?

We’ve held on to them for far too long now. Millennials, it’s time to say goodbye to skinny and tight-fitting styles because we’re moving towards more comfortable fits.

Riding on the train of the cargo pants trend, 2023 is all about longer, looser and baggier jeans.

Expect to see paddle pants, patchwork designs and even cargo jeans. Basically, everything that was in your wardrobe back in 2003 but with a more chic twist.

What is Y2K fashion?

The Y2K aesthetic drew inspiration from a range of cultural and fashion trends from the early 2000s.

It features a distinctive blend of futuristic and vintage styles, including bright colours, bold prints, oversized shapes, and playful use of metallic and glitter – all of which are key trends of SS23.

Signature items of Y2K fashion include low-rise jeans, crop tops, short skirts, baggy t-shirts, bulky sneakers, and eye-catching accessories.
