You’ve probably already seen luxury brands Bottega Veneta, Valentino, and Fendi’s crocheted pieces, from dresses to bags to shoes, and thought to yourself is crochet in fashion in 2021?
If those and the celebrities (including F.K.A. Twigs, Bella Hadid, and Harry Styles) and influencers (like Blanca Miro) wearing crocheted pieces are to be the barometer, the answer is a resounding yes.
Searches for crochet have been steadily high since the start of lockdowns last year too. But it wasn’t always popular.

Crochet in fashion
Crochet reportedly wasn’t regarded highly, but a nod from Queen Victoria reportedly gave the style a boost to help Irish makers during the potato famine. The royal even crocheted scarves herself and awarded them to selected war veterans.
Fast forward to the 1900s to the 1920s and crochet became a popular style in haute couture.
Five decades later, crochet became more vibrant than ever. Think Cher in that crocheted bell sleeve mini dress and Melanie Griffith in that green crocheted top.
And here we are today, dreaming up spring and summer outfits consisting of crochet everything — from hats to tops to bags.
Luxury brands are still in the picture (if you can afford their pieces), but they’re not the only ones championing this rising trend.
