Love them or loathe them, chunky trainers are here to stay.
Truth be told, I’ve scoffed at the thought of them being resurrected by the Gen-Z. They’re clunky and over-the-top. But then I remembered how cool and fun the Spice Girls looked when they wore them in the ‘90s. Maybe chunky sneakers aren’t all that bad or ‘ugly’ — actually, some of them are really pretty cool.
The Balenciaga Triple S, the Louis Vuitton Archlight, and the Yeezy Boost 700 prove that dads’ thick-soled shoes are as stylish as they are functional and comfortable.

Of course, we can’t forget about the ones that started the trend in the late ‘80s and the ‘90s. New Balance, Reebok, and Buffalo are back in the game with refreshed versions of their bestsellers from back in the day.
You see them everywhere, from designers on the runway to influencers on your phone and people in the streets. There truly is no stopping the chunky trainers from dominating our shoe closets.
So why not fully embrace the trend? If you’re thinking, ‘Well, I don’t know what to wear them with’, there’s plenty of inspiration out there.
You can go down the athleisure route and pair them with sporty co-ords. Or you can go with a maxi dress for a more interesting pairing. But ultimately, there are no rules! Wear them with whatever you want and bask in their comfort and style.
I’ve rounded up the best chunky trainers on the market, with options from Veja, New Balance, Reebok, Superga, Converse and more, to help you (and me) get started.
