Disney+ Set to Celebrate the Life of Karl Lagerfeld With a New Series Starring Daniel Brühl

Filming is currently underway for Kaiser Karl.

Four years on from Karl Lagerfeld’s death, Disney+ has announced a new series celebrating the fashion icon’s life and legacy.

Kaiser Karl will be a six-part series based on the biography of the same name, written by Raphaëlle Bacqué and starring Daniel Brühl as Lagerfeld.

Alongside him, Théodore Pellerin will star as Jacques de Bascher, Alex Lutz as Pierre Bergé, Arnaud Valois as Yves Saint Laurent, Agnès Jaoui as Chloé founder Gaby Aghion, Sunnyi Melles as Marlene Dietrich, Belgian artist Claire Laffut as Loulou de la Falaise, Paul Spera as Andy Warhol, and Jeanne Damas as Paloma Picasso.

Lagerfeld’s reputation is widely acknowledged, having left an indelible mark on some of the fashion industry’s most renowned brands, such as Fendi, Chloe, and Chanel, in addition to his own.

We are promised to get a glimpse of Lagerfeld’s story and the realm of Parisian high fashion during the 1970s. We cannot wait – and luckily, we won’t have to for long.

Filming is currently underway in France, Monaco and Italy, but it won’t be a small feat. According to Vogue, there will be 2,200 extras, over 40 sets and 3,000 costumes.

The story is set to begin in 1972 and chart Lagerfeld’s rise to the top of the fashion industry.

The series will explore the German Fashion Designer’s tumultuous relationship with Pierre Berge, the partner of Yves Saint Laurent, as well as delving into Lagerfeld’s romantic life, portraying the beginnings of his relationship with Jacques de Bascher, his partner of many years.

This will not be the only tribute for the icon this year, as the Met Gala 2023 will also pay homage to the designer’s seven-decade career.

Karl Lagerfeld’s last show was at the Grand Palais in Paris. Chanel transformed the venue into a magical winter wonderland, welcoming guests into a breathtaking setting to show the autumn winter 2019 collection.

The fashion industry collectively paid tribute to the iconic designer, who sadly passed away on February 19th at the age of 85.
